U.S.G.S. DIRECTOR

 

John Wesley Powell assumed the directorship of the United States Geological Survey in 1881.

This letter to the Secretary of the Interior reads:

To the Honorable
The Secretary of the Interior.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of this date, enclosing my appointment as Director of the U.S. Geological Survey.

My oath of office was forwarded to the Department March 21, 1881.
