This plaque marks the spot in the Grand Canyon where 3 men in John Wesley Powell's first exploration of the Colorado River left the expedition in fear for their lives.

They had no way of knowing that they would shortly meet their deaths. The Powell expedition meanwhile reached "civilization" just two days following their departure.
